Numerical answer

A 12 V12\ \mathrm{V} battery of negligible internal resistance is connected in series with a 2 kΩ2\ \mathrm{k\Omega} resistor to a node. Between this node and the other battery terminal are connected, in parallel, a 4 kΩ4\ \mathrm{k\Omega} resistor and an initially uncharged 100 μF100\ \mu\mathrm{F} capacitor. The switch is closed at t=0t=0. Find the time (in milliseconds) at which the voltage across the capacitor reaches 6 V6\ \mathrm{V}. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 184.84

Replace everything seen by the capacitor by its Thevenin equivalent. The open-circuit voltage across the 4 kΩ4\ \mathrm{k\Omega} resistor is Vth=12×42+4=8 VV_{th}=12\times\dfrac{4}{2+4}=8\ \mathrm{V}, and the equivalent resistance is Rth=2∥4=43 kΩR_{th}=2\parallel4=\dfrac43\ \mathrm{k\Omega}. The time constant is τ=RthC=43×103×100×10−6=0.1333 s\tau=R_{th}C=\dfrac43\times10^3\times100\times10^{-6}=0.1333\ \mathrm{s}. The capacitor voltage is VC=Vth(1−e−t/τ)V_C=V_{th}\left(1-e^{-t/\tau}\right), so setting VC=6 VV_C=6\ \mathrm{V} gives 1−e−t/τ=0.751-e^{-t/\tau}=0.75, i.e. t=τln⁡4=0.1333×1.3863=0.18484 st=\tau\ln4=0.1333\times1.3863=0.18484\ \mathrm{s}. This is 184.84 ms184.84\ \mathrm{ms}. The final value is 8 V8\ \mathrm{V}, not 12 V12\ \mathrm{V}, so 6 V6\ \mathrm{V} is reachable. Quick check: at t=τln⁡4t=\tau\ln4 the exponential term equals 1/41/4, so VC=8(1−0.25)=6 VV_C=8(1-0.25)=6\ \mathrm{V}. Ignoring the 4 kΩ4\ \mathrm{k\Omega} branch and using τ=RC=0.2 s\tau=RC=0.2\ \mathrm{s} with V∞=12 VV_\infty=12\ \mathrm{V} would give the wrong value of 138.63 ms138.63\ \mathrm{ms}.
