Let y=y(x) be the solution of xdy/dx+y=x^2y^2 with y(1)=1/2, defined on the largest interval containing x=1 on which it is a solution.

One or more options correct

Let y=y(x)y=y(x) be the solution of xdydx+y=x2y2x\dfrac{dy}{dx}+y=x^{2}y^{2} with y(1)=12y(1)=\dfrac12, defined on the largest interval containing x=1x=1 on which it is a solution. Which of the following is (are) correct?
  1. A. y(2)=12y(2)=\dfrac12
  2. B. The minimum value of yy on its interval of definition is 49\dfrac49
  3. C. ∫12y(x) dx=23ln⁡2\displaystyle\int_{1}^{2}y(x)\,dx=\dfrac23\ln 2
  4. D. y(x)y(x) is defined for all x>0x>0
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, C

This is a Bernoulli equation. Divide by y2y^2 and put u=1/yu=1/y, so u′=−y′/y2u'=-y'/y^2: the equation becomes −xu′+u=x2-xu'+u=x^2, i.e. u′−ux=−xu'-\frac{u}{x}=-x. The integrating factor is 1x\frac1x, giving (ux)′=−1\left(\frac ux\right)'=-1, so u=x(C−x)u=x(C-x). Hence y=1x(C−x)y=\frac1{x(C-x)}, and y(1)=12y(1)=\frac12 gives C=3C=3: y=1x(3−x)y=\frac{1}{x(3-x)} on (0,3)(0,3). (A) y(2)=12⋅1=12y(2)=\frac1{2\cdot1}=\frac12; correct. (B) x(3−x)x(3-x) is maximal at x=32x=\frac32 with value 94\frac94, so the minimum of yy is 49\frac49; correct. (C) ∫dxx(3−x)=13ln⁡x3−x\int\frac{dx}{x(3-x)}=\frac13\ln\frac{x}{3-x}, which evaluated from 11 to 22 is 13(ln⁡2+ln⁡2)=23ln⁡2\frac13(\ln2+\ln2)=\frac23\ln2; correct. (D) y→∞y\to\infty as x→3−x\to3^-, so the solution exists only on (0,3)(0,3); incorrect. Answer: A, B, C.
