Single correct option

In a Young's double-slit experiment the slit separation is 1.0 mm1.0\ \mathrm{mm} and the screen is 1.0 m1.0\ \mathrm{m} from the slits. The whole apparatus is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 4/34/3, and a thin glass sheet (refractive index 1.51.5, thickness 12 μm12\ \mu\mathrm{m}) is placed in front of one slit, normal to the light. The central bright fringe on the screen shifts by
  1. A. 1.5 mm1.5\ \mathrm{mm} towards the sheet
  2. B. 2.0 mm2.0\ \mathrm{mm} towards the sheet
  3. C. 6.0 mm6.0\ \mathrm{mm} towards the sheet
  4. D. 0.75 mm0.75\ \mathrm{mm} towards the sheet
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1.5 mm1.5\ \mathrm{mm} towards the sheet

The sheet adds an extra optical path (μg−μl)t(\mu_g-\mu_l)t in one arm, where μl=4/3\mu_l=4/3 is the index of the surrounding liquid, since the same thickness of liquid is replaced. The extra optical path is (1.5−4/3)×12 μm=2.0 μm(1.5-4/3)\times12\ \mu\mathrm{m}=2.0\ \mu\mathrm{m}. In the liquid the geometrical path difference at a screen point is yd/Dyd/D, and the corresponding optical path difference is μl yd/D\mu_l\,yd/D. The central fringe is where the total optical path difference vanishes, so μl ydD=2.0 μm\mu_l\,\dfrac{yd}{D}=2.0\ \mu\mathrm{m} and y=2.0×10−6×1.0(4/3)×10−3=1.5 mmy=\dfrac{2.0\times10^{-6}\times1.0}{(4/3)\times10^{-3}}=1.5\ \mathrm{mm}, towards the side of the glass sheet. Ignoring the liquid gives (μg−1)tD/d=6.0 mm(\mu_g-1)tD/d=6.0\ \mathrm{mm}; forgetting the factor μl\mu_l gives 2.0 mm2.0\ \mathrm{mm}; using half the sheet effect gives 0.75 mm0.75\ \mathrm{mm}.
