Single correct option

Hex-3-yne\mathrm{Hex\text{-}3\text{-}yne} is reduced with Na/liq. NH3\mathrm{Na/liq.\ NH_3} to give X\mathbf{X}. X\mathbf{X} is treated with Br2/CCl4\mathrm{Br_2/CCl_4} to give Y\mathbf{Y}, and one equivalent of Y\mathbf{Y} is then heated with alcoholic KOH\mathrm{KOH} (a single anti-periplanar E2 elimination of HBr\mathrm{HBr} occurs) to give the vinylic bromide Z\mathbf{Z}, C6H11Br\mathrm{C_6H_{11}Br}. Which option correctly describes Y\mathbf{Y} and Z\mathbf{Z}?
  1. A. Y\mathbf{Y} is meso; Z\mathbf{Z} is (Z)(Z)-3-bromohex-3-ene
  2. B. Y\mathbf{Y} is meso; Z\mathbf{Z} is (E)(E)-3-bromohex-3-ene
  3. C. Y\mathbf{Y} is a racemic mixture; Z\mathbf{Z} is (Z)(Z)-3-bromohex-3-ene
  4. D. Y\mathbf{Y} is a racemic mixture; Z\mathbf{Z} is (E)(E)-3-bromohex-3-ene
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Y\mathbf{Y} is meso; Z\mathbf{Z} is (E)(E)-3-bromohex-3-ene

Sodium in liquid ammonia reduces an alkyne by anti addition of hydrogen, so X\mathbf{X} is (E)(E)-hex-3-ene. Bromine adds anti across the double bond (bromonium ion opened from the opposite face); anti addition to an (E)(E) symmetrical alkene gives the meso dibromide, (3R,4S)(3R,4S)-3,4-dibromohexane, Y\mathbf{Y}. For E2, H\mathrm{H} on C-3 and Br\mathrm{Br} on C-4 must be anti-periplanar. In that staggered conformer of the meso isomer the remaining Br\mathrm{Br} on C-3 sits anti to the ethyl group on C-4 (a 3D model gives a dihedral of about 170∘170^\circ). After elimination these two groups lie on opposite sides of the double bond, and as Br\mathrm{Br} and the C-4 ethyl are the higher-priority groups, the alkene is (E)(E)-3-bromohex-3-ene. The racemic dibromide would instead place them gauche, giving the (Z)(Z) isomer. Hence meso Y\mathbf{Y} and (E)(E) Z\mathbf{Z}.
