Numerical answer

Toluene is oxidised by hot alkaline KMnO4\mathrm{KMnO_4} (then acidified) to A\mathrm{A}. A\mathrm{A} is treated with SOCl2\mathrm{SOCl_2}, then excess NH3\mathrm{NH_3} to give B\mathrm{B}. B\mathrm{B} is warmed with Br2/KOH\mathrm{Br_2/KOH} to give C\mathrm{C}, which with NaNO2/HCl\mathrm{NaNO_2/HCl} at 273273–278 K278\ \mathrm{K} forms D\mathrm{D}. D\mathrm{D} couples with phenol in mildly alkaline medium (mainly at the para position of phenol) to give E\mathrm{E}. The number of distinct signals in the proton-decoupled 13C^{13}\mathrm{C} NMR spectrum of E\mathrm{E} (assume free rotation about all single bonds and the EE azo configuration) is _____.

Answer: 8

Step by step: toluene →\to benzoic acid (A) →\to benzoyl chloride →\to benzamide (B) →\to aniline (C, Hofmann bromamide degradation, one carbon is lost as carbonate) →\to benzenediazonium chloride (D) →\to azo coupling with phenol at the position para to OH\mathrm{OH} gives E=E= 4-hydroxyazobenzene, HO−C6H4−N=N−C6H5\mathrm{HO{-}C_6H_4{-}N{=}N{-}C_6H_5} (SMILES Oc1ccc(cc1)N=Nc1ccccc1\mathrm{Oc1ccc(cc1)N{=}Nc1ccccc1}). Count the chemically distinct carbons. The unsubstituted phenyl ring has a local mirror plane through C-1 and C-4 (given free rotation), so it shows 4 signals: ipso, ortho (2 equivalent), meta (2 equivalent) and para. The para-disubstituted ring has two different substituents but also a mirror plane, so it gives 4 signals: C bearing OH\mathrm{OH}, C bearing N=N\mathrm{N{=}N}, and two pairs of equivalent CH carbons. The total is 4+4=84+4=8.
