Numerical answer
All the alkenes of molecular formula (counting each geometrical isomer separately) are treated with over a platinum catalyst, which adds one to each carbon of the double bond. How many of these alkenes give a product that is chiral (that is, whose molecules are non-superimposable on their mirror images)?
Show answer and solution
Answer: 6
Enumerate the acyclic alkenes of : pent-1-ene, -pent-2-ene, -pent-2-ene, 2-methylbut-1-ene, 3-methylbut-1-ene and 2-methylbut-2-ene (six in all). Adding (syn addition) gives: (one stereocentre , with four different groups ), for both 2-pentenes (two stereocentres, ends different), (stereocentre has ), and . Every product carries at least one stereocentre because the two isotopes make the carbons inequivalent, and none has an internal mirror plane, so all six products are chiral (with none would be, since pentane and 2-methylbutane are achiral).
