Numerical answer

A satellite moves in a circular orbit of radius 2R2R about the Earth, where R=6400 kmR=6400\ \mathrm{km} is the Earth's radius. A short tangential retro-impulse reduces its speed so that the new elliptical orbit just grazes the Earth's surface at its nearest point (perigee). Take g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-2}} at the surface and ignore air drag and the Earth's rotation. The speed of the satellite at perigee, in km s−1\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}, is ______. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 9.14

The retro-impulse point is the apogee of the new ellipse, ra=2Rr_a=2R, and the perigee is rp=Rr_p=R. Angular momentum conservation gives vpR=va(2R)v_p R=v_a(2R), so vp=2vav_p=2v_a. Energy conservation gives 12va2−GM2R=12vp2−GMR\tfrac12 v_a^2-\dfrac{GM}{2R}=\tfrac12 v_p^2-\dfrac{GM}{R}. Substituting vp=2vav_p=2v_a gives 32va2=GM2R\tfrac32v_a^2=\dfrac{GM}{2R}, so va2=GM3R=gR3v_a^2=\dfrac{GM}{3R}=\dfrac{gR}{3} with GM=gR2GM=gR^2. Then vp=2gR3=29.8×6.4×1063=9.14×103 m s−1v_p=2\sqrt{\dfrac{gR}{3}}=2\sqrt{\dfrac{9.8\times6.4\times10^{6}}{3}}=9.14\times10^{3}\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. This exceeds the circular-orbit speed at RR (7.927.92 km/s) as it must for an ellipse, a useful sanity check. The retro-impulse reduces kinetic energy at apogee only, so the new orbit shares its apogee point with the old circle. The semi-major axis is 1.5R1.5R, giving the same result through the vis-viva equation v2=GM(2/r−1/a)v^2=GM(2/r-1/a).
