One or more options correct

A satellite of mass mm moves in a circular orbit of radius 2R2R around the Earth of mass MM and radius RR. Air drag is absent and the Earth does not rotate. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The orbital speed of the satellite is GM/R\sqrt{GM/R}.
  2. B. The total mechanical energy of the satellite is −GMm4R-\dfrac{GMm}{4R}.
  3. C. If the speed of the satellite is suddenly doubled (direction unchanged), it escapes from the Earth's gravitational field.
  4. D. If the speed of the satellite is suddenly halved (direction unchanged), it strikes the Earth's surface.

Answer: B, C, D

For a circular orbit of radius 2R2R, vc=GM/2Rv_c=\sqrt{GM/2R}, so (A) is false. Then KE=GMm4RKE=\frac{GMm}{4R}, PE=−GMm2RPE=-\frac{GMm}{2R} and E=−GMm4RE=-\frac{GMm}{4R}, so (B) is true. With speed 2vc2v_c the energy is 12m⋅4GM2R−GMm2R=+GMm2R>0\frac12m\cdot4\frac{GM}{2R}-\frac{GMm}{2R}=+\frac{GMm}{2R}>0, so the satellite escapes (C true). With speed vc/2v_c/2 the satellite is at apogee 2R2R of an ellipse. Angular momentum gives vprp=vc2⋅2R=vcRv_pr_p=\frac{v_c}{2}\cdot2R=v_cR and energy gives 12vp2−GMrp=−7GM16R\frac12v_p^2-\frac{GM}{r_p}=-\frac{7GM}{16R}. Solving with GM=R=1GM=R=1 yields 7rp2−16rp+4=07r_p^2-16r_p+4=0, i.e. rp=2r_p=2 or rp=2R7<Rr_p=\frac{2R}{7}<R. The perigee is inside the Earth, so it strikes the surface (D true). Note that the energy of the new orbit decides escape, while the speed reduction does not change the position, so the point of the change always remains the apogee of the new orbit.
