Numerical answer

A copper rod (K=400 W m−1K−1K=400\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-1}K^{-1}}, length 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m}) is joined end to end with a brass rod (K=100 W m−1K−1K=100\ \mathrm{W\,m^{-1}K^{-1}}, length 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m}); both have cross-sectional area 1.4×10−4 m21.4\times10^{-4}\ \mathrm{m^2} and the lateral surfaces are perfectly insulated. The free copper end is kept in steam at 100∘C100^\circ\mathrm{C} and the free brass end rests on a large block of ice at 0∘C0^\circ\mathrm{C}. Latent heat of fusion of ice is 336 J g−1336\ \mathrm{J\,g^{-1}}. Find the mass of ice (in grams) melted in 2020 minutes in steady state.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 8

In steady state the same heat current flows through both rods, which behave as thermal resistances in series, Rth=LKAR_{th}=\dfrac{L}{KA}. The total is 1A(0.5400+0.5100)=11.4×10−4×6.25×10−3=44.64 K W−1\dfrac{1}{A}\left(\dfrac{0.5}{400}+\dfrac{0.5}{100}\right)=\dfrac{1}{1.4\times10^{-4}}\times6.25\times10^{-3}=44.64\ \mathrm{K\,W^{-1}}. The heat current is H=ΔTRth=10044.64=2.24 WH=\dfrac{\Delta T}{R_{th}}=\dfrac{100}{44.64}=2.24\ \mathrm{W}. The temperature of the junction is 100−H×0.5400×1.4×10−4=100−2.24×8.93=80∘C100-H\times\dfrac{0.5}{400\times1.4\times10^{-4}}=100-2.24\times8.93=80^\circ\mathrm{C}, showing that most of the drop occurs across the brass rod. In 20 min=1200 s20\ \mathrm{min}=1200\ \mathrm{s} the heat conducted is 2.24×1200=2688 J2.24\times1200=2688\ \mathrm{J}, which melts 2688/336=8 g2688/336=8\ \mathrm{g} of ice. The conversion uses 336 J g−1336\ \mathrm{J\,g^{-1}} for the latent heat, so each gram absorbs 336336 J, and 2688/3362688/336 is exactly 88, the required integer.
