A continuous function f:[0,1]→mathbb R satisfies f(x)=x+∫0^1 (xt+t^2f(t) dt for all x∈[0,1].

One or more options correct

A continuous function f:[0,1]→Rf:[0,1]\to\mathbb R satisfies f(x)=x+∫01(xt+t2)f(t) dtf(x)=x+\displaystyle\int_0^1 (xt+t^2)f(t)\,dt for all x∈[0,1]x\in[0,1]. Which of the following is (are) correct?
  1. A. f(1)=6623f(1)=\dfrac{66}{23}
  2. B. ∫01f(x) dx=2\displaystyle\int_0^1 f(x)\,dx=2
  3. C. f(0)=1f(0)=1
  4. D. f′(x)=2f'(x)=2 for every xx
Show answer and solution

Answer: A

The integral is linear in xx, so f(x)=x+ax+bf(x)=x+ax+b with a=∫01tf(t) dta=\int_0^1 tf(t)\,dt and b=∫01t2f(t) dtb=\int_0^1 t^2f(t)\,dt. Substituting f(t)=(1+a)t+bf(t)=(1+a)t+b: a=1+a3+b2a=\frac{1+a}{3}+\frac b2 and b=1+a4+b3b=\frac{1+a}{4}+\frac b3. The second equation gives 2b3=1+a4\frac{2b}{3}=\frac{1+a}{4}, so b=3(1+a)8b=\frac{3(1+a)}{8}; the first then gives a=1+a3+3(1+a)16=25(1+a)48a=\frac{1+a}{3}+\frac{3(1+a)}{16}=\frac{25(1+a)}{48}, i.e. 23a=2523a=25, so a=2523a=\frac{25}{23} and b=38⋅4823=1823b=\frac{3}{8}\cdot\frac{48}{23}=\frac{18}{23}. Both constants reproduce the original integrals, which was also confirmed symbolically. Hence f(x)=48x+1823f(x)=\frac{48x+18}{23}. Then f(1)=6623f(1)=\frac{66}{23} (option A true), f(0)=1823≠1f(0)=\frac{18}{23}\neq1 (C false), ∫01f=24+1823=4223≠2\int_0^1f=\frac{24+18}{23}=\frac{42}{23}\neq2 (B false) and f′(x)=4823≠2f'(x)=\frac{48}{23}\neq2 (D false).
