Numerical answer

A solution contains 0.010 M0.010\ \mathrm{M} Mg2+\mathrm{Mg^{2+}} and 1.5 M1.5\ \mathrm{M} NH4Cl\mathrm{NH_4Cl}. Aqueous ammonia is added gradually. Given Ksp[Mg(OH)2]=4.0×10−12K_{sp}[\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2}]=4.0\times10^{-12} and Kb(NH3)=1.0×10−5K_b(\mathrm{NH_3})=1.0\times10^{-5}, find the minimum concentration of NH3\mathrm{NH_3} (in mol L−1\mathrm{mol\,L^{-1}}) that must be present to just start precipitation of Mg(OH)2\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2}. Ignore any change in volume and take [NH4+]≈1.5 M[\mathrm{NH_4^+}]\approx1.5\ \mathrm{M}.

Answer: 3

Precipitation of Mg(OH)2\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2} begins when the ionic product equals KspK_{sp}: [OH−]2=Ksp[Mg2+]=4.0×10−120.010=4.0×10−10[\mathrm{OH^-}]^2=\dfrac{K_{sp}}{[\mathrm{Mg^{2+}}]}=\dfrac{4.0\times10^{-12}}{0.010}=4.0\times10^{-10}, so [OH−]=2.0×10−5 M[\mathrm{OH^-}]=2.0\times10^{-5}\ \mathrm{M}. The hydroxide concentration is fixed by the NH3/NH4+\mathrm{NH_3/NH_4^+} buffer through Kb=[NH4+][OH−][NH3]K_b=\dfrac{[\mathrm{NH_4^+}][\mathrm{OH^-}]}{[\mathrm{NH_3}]}. Therefore [NH3]=[NH4+][OH−]Kb=1.5×2.0×10−51.0×10−5=3.0 M[\mathrm{NH_3}]=\dfrac{[\mathrm{NH_4^+}][\mathrm{OH^-}]}{K_b}=\dfrac{1.5\times2.0\times10^{-5}}{1.0\times10^{-5}}=3.0\ \mathrm{M}. Any lower ammonia concentration keeps the ionic product below KspK_{sp} and no precipitate forms; this is why ammonium chloride is added to prevent precipitation of the magnesium group in qualitative analysis. The answer is 33. Note that using KbK_b with the correct buffer ratio is essential: using the ammonium concentration alone would not give the required free ammonia.
