Single correct option

A thin biconvex glass lens of refractive index 1.51.5 has both surfaces of radius of curvature 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm}. A point object is placed on the axis in air at 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens. The space on the other side of the lens is filled with water of refractive index 43\dfrac43. The image is formed in the water at a distance (from the lens) of
  1. A. 30 cm30\ \mathrm{cm}
  2. B. 80 cm80\ \mathrm{cm}
  3. C. 120 cm120\ \mathrm{cm}
  4. D. 180 cm180\ \mathrm{cm}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 80 cm80\ \mathrm{cm}

The lens has different media on its two sides, so the lens-maker formula for a lens in a single medium cannot be used; apply the single-surface refraction formula n2v−n1u=n2−n1R\dfrac{n_2}{v}-\dfrac{n_1}{u}=\dfrac{n_2-n_1}{R} twice (thin lens, so distances are measured from the lens). Surface 1 (air to glass, R=+20R=+20, u=−60u=-60): 1.5v1=0.520−160=1120\dfrac{1.5}{v_1}=\dfrac{0.5}{20}-\dfrac1{60}=\dfrac1{120}, so v1=180 cmv_1=180\ \mathrm{cm}. This image acts as the virtual object for the second surface. Surface 2 (glass to water, R=−20R=-20, u=+180u=+180): 4/3v=4/3−1.5−20+1.5180=1120+1120=160\dfrac{4/3}{v}=\dfrac{4/3-1.5}{-20}+\dfrac{1.5}{180}=\dfrac1{120}+\dfrac1{120}=\dfrac1{60}, so v=80 cmv=80\ \mathrm{cm}. Option 180 cm180\ \mathrm{cm} is the intermediate image, and 30 cm30\ \mathrm{cm} is the answer if the lens were in air on both sides (f=20 cmf=20\ \mathrm{cm}).
