Single correct option

A plano-convex glass lens (μ=1.5\mu=1.5) has focal length 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m} in air. Its convex surface is placed on a flat glass plate of the same material, and the thin gap between them is filled with a liquid of refractive index 1.21.2. The arrangement is illuminated normally by monochromatic light of wavelength 600 nm600\ \mathrm{nm} (in air) and viewed by reflection. The radius of the fifth dark ring (not counting the central dark spot as a ring) is
  1. A. 0.79 mm0.79\ \mathrm{mm}
  2. B. 0.87 mm0.87\ \mathrm{mm}
  3. C. 0.75 mm0.75\ \mathrm{mm}
  4. D. 0.95 mm0.95\ \mathrm{mm}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 0.79 mm0.79\ \mathrm{mm}

First find the radius of curvature from the lens-maker formula for a plano-convex lens: 1f=(μ−1)1R\frac1f=(\mu-1)\frac1R, so R=0.5×0.5=0.25R=0.5\times0.5=0.25 m. The film is liquid of index 1.21.2, which is less than that of glass. Reflection at the glass-to-liquid boundary has no phase change, while that at the liquid-to-glass boundary has a change of π\pi, so the central spot is dark and dark rings satisfy 2μt=nλ2\mu t=n\lambda. For a gap t=r22Rt=\frac{r^2}{2R} this gives rn2=nλRμr_n^2=\frac{n\lambda R}{\mu}. For n=5n=5: r2=5×600×10−9×0.251.2=6.25×10−7 m2r^2=\frac{5\times600\times10^{-9}\times0.25}{1.2}=6.25\times10^{-7}\ \mathrm{m^2}, so r=0.79r=0.79 mm. Omitting the liquid index gives 0.870.87 mm, using a bright-ring condition gives 0.750.75 mm, and multiplying instead of dividing by μ\mu gives 0.950.95 mm.
