Single correct option

The number of ways of distributing 1010 identical balls among 44 distinct boxes so that every box receives at least 11 ball and no box receives more than 44 balls is
  1. A. 4444
  2. B. 8484
  3. C. 4040
  4. D. 5656
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 4444

Let box ii get xix_i balls with 1≤xi≤41\le x_i\le4 and ∑xi=10\sum x_i=10. Put yi=xi−1y_i=x_i-1, so yi≥0y_i\ge0, yi≤3y_i\le3 and ∑yi=6\sum y_i=6. Without the upper bound the count is (6+33)=84\binom{6+3}{3}=84. Violations: some yi≥4y_i\ge4. Fix one box with yi≥4y_i\ge4; set yi′=yi−4y_i'=y_i-4, giving ∑=2\sum=2 and (2+33)=10\binom{2+3}{3}=10 solutions, and there are 44 choices of box: 4040. Two boxes with y≥4y\ge4 would need total ≥8>6\ge8>6, impossible, so no overlap. By inclusion-exclusion the answer is 84−40=4484-40=44. Direct enumeration of all quadruples in {1,2,3,4}4\{1,2,3,4\}^4 with sum 1010 also gives 4444. Option (B) 8484 ignores the upper bound; (C) 4040 is the number of violating arrangements; (D) arises from wrongly using (83)\binom{8}{3}.
