Numerical answer

Ten identical balls are distributed among four distinct boxes so that every box receives at least 11 and at most 44 balls. Find the number of distributions.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 44

We need the number of integer solutions of a+b+c+d=10a+b+c+d=10 with 1≤a,b,c,d≤41\le a,b,c,d\le4. Put a′=a−1a'=a-1, etc.: a′+b′+c′+d′=6a'+b'+c'+d'=6 with 0≤a′≤30\le a'\le3. Without the upper bound there are (93)=84\binom93=84 solutions. Subtract those where some variable is at least 44: fixing one variable ≥4\ge4 leaves (53)=10\binom{5}{3}=10 solutions for each of the 44 choices, giving 4040. Two variables both ≥4\ge4 would need at least 8>68>6, so there is no overlap. By inclusion-exclusion the count is 84−40=4484-40=44. A brute-force enumeration over all 444^4 tuples confirms 4444.
