Single correct option

A fair die is thrown once. If the number is 11 or 22, two balls are drawn one after another without replacement from bag AA containing 33 red and 22 blue balls. Otherwise, two balls are drawn one after another with replacement from bag BB containing 22 red and 44 blue balls. Given that both balls drawn are red, the probability that bag AA was used is
  1. A. 2047\dfrac{20}{47}
  2. B. 947\dfrac{9}{47}
  3. C. 2747\dfrac{27}{47}
  4. D. 13\dfrac{1}{3}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 2747\dfrac{27}{47}

Use Bayes' theorem. Bag AA is chosen with probability 1/31/3 and bag BB with probability 2/32/3. From AA without replacement, P(RR)=35⋅24=310P(RR)=\frac{3}{5}\cdot\frac{2}{4}=\frac{3}{10}. From BB with replacement, P(RR)=(26)2=19P(RR)=\left(\frac{2}{6}\right)^2=\frac19. The total probability is P(RR)=13⋅310+23⋅19=110+227=47270P(RR)=\frac13\cdot\frac{3}{10}+\frac23\cdot\frac19=\frac{1}{10}+\frac{2}{27}=\frac{47}{270}. Therefore P(A∣RR)=1/1047/270=2747P(A\mid RR)=\dfrac{1/10}{47/270}=\dfrac{27}{47}. The value 1/31/3 is the prior and ignores the evidence, 9/479/47 is a distractor that does not follow from the data, and 20/4720/47 is the posterior probability for bag BB, i.e. 1−27471-\frac{27}{47}.
