JEE Advanced 2016 Paper 2 Chemistry: Paragraph 2

A pale green crystalline double salt X\mathbf{X} is analysed. Its aqueous solution gives a white precipitate with BaCl2\mathrm{BaCl_2} that is insoluble in dilute HCl, a dark blue precipitate with K3[Fe(CN)6]\mathrm{K_3[Fe(CN)_6]}, and the smell of ammonia on warming with NaOH solution. Analysis shows that one formula unit of X\mathbf{X} contains two NH4+\mathrm{NH_4^+}, two SO42−\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}}, one iron ion and six molecules of water of crystallisation, so that X\mathbf{X} is stable in air and is used as a primary standard in redox titrations. Take M(X)=392.1 g mol−1M(\mathbf{X})=392.1\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}. A solution of X\mathbf{X} is mixed with NaNO3\mathrm{NaNO_3}, and conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} is carefully added down the side of the tube, which gives a brown ring at the junction due to a complex [Fe(H2O)5NO]2+[\mathrm{Fe(H_2O)_5NO}]^{2+}; in this complex the nitrosyl ligand is NO+\mathrm{NO^+}, the iron is high-spin and the five water molecules are neutral.

Question 1

Single correct option

To an aqueous solution of 1.961.96 g of X\mathbf{X}, excess BaCl2\mathrm{BaCl_2} solution is added and the white precipitate is filtered, washed and dried to constant mass. Taking M(BaSO4)=233.4 g mol−1M(\mathrm{BaSO_4})=233.4\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}, the mass of the precipitate is closest to
  1. A. 1.17 g
  2. B. 2.33 g
  3. C. 3.50 g
  4. D. 4.67 g
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2.33 g

The description fits Mohr's salt, (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2⋅6H2O(\mathrm{NH_4})_2\mathrm{Fe(SO_4)_2\cdot6H_2O}: the blue precipitate with ferricyanide shows Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}}, barium sulfate formation shows SO42−\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}} and ammonia on warming shows NH4+\mathrm{NH_4^+}. The six waters of crystallisation are included in the molar mass of 392.1 g mol−1392.1\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}. Moles of X\mathbf{X} in 1.961.96 g =1.96/392.1=5.00×10−3=1.96/392.1=5.00\times10^{-3}. Each formula unit supplies two sulfate ions, since the iron ion is Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} and the two ammonium ions balance the charge of two sulfates, so n(SO42−)=1.00×10−2n(\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}})=1.00\times10^{-2} mol. With excess barium, Ba2++SO42−→BaSO4↓\mathrm{Ba^{2+}}+\mathrm{SO_4^{2-}}\to\mathrm{BaSO_4}\downarrow is complete, so the mass is 1.00×10−2×233.4=2.331.00\times10^{-2}\times233.4=2.33 g. The value 1.171.17 g counts only one sulfate per formula unit, 3.503.50 g counts three, and 4.674.67 g counts four.

Question 2

Single correct option

The spin-only magnetic moment of the brown-ring complex ion [Fe(H2O)5NO]2+[\mathrm{Fe(H_2O)_5NO}]^{2+}, in Bohr magnetons, is
  1. A. 1.73
  2. B. 2.83
  3. C. 3.87
  4. D. 5.92
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 3.87

The overall charge is +2+2. The five water ligands are neutral and nitrosyl is NO+\mathrm{NO^+}, which carries +1+1, so the iron oxidation state is +2−1=+1+2-1=+1. Nitrate is reduced by Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} in conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4} to NO, which then binds to a further Fe2+\mathrm{Fe^{2+}} and transfers an electron, so the metal ends in the +1+1 state. Iron(I) is 3d73d^7 (the 4s4s electron is moved to dd in the complex). In a high-spin octahedral field this is t2g5eg2t_{2g}^5e_g^2, which has three unpaired electrons. Hence μ=n(n+2)=3×5=15=3.87\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)}=\sqrt{3\times5}=\sqrt{15}=3.87 BM. The value 5.925.92 BM would correspond to high-spin d5d^5 (Fe3+)(\mathrm{Fe^{3+}}), 1.731.73 BM to a low-spin d7d^7 ion with one unpaired electron, and 2.832.83 BM to two unpaired electrons.
