Single correct option

A thin uniform hoop of mass mm and radius RR rolls without slipping on a horizontal floor with centre speed vv and meets a fixed vertical step of height R/2R/2. The hoop does not slip or bounce at the edge of the step, and the floor is frictional enough to let it pivot about the edge. The minimum value of vv for which the hoop can just climb onto the step is
  1. A. gR/2\sqrt{gR/2}
  2. B. 8gR/9\sqrt{8gR/9}
  3. C. gR\sqrt{gR}
  4. D. 2gR\sqrt{2gR}

Answer: (B) 8gR/9\sqrt{8gR/9}

During the impulsive contact the only external impulse acts at the step edge, so angular momentum about the edge is conserved. Before impact, the spin part is Iω=mR2(v/R)=mRvI\omega=mR^2(v/R)=mRv and the orbital part is mv(R−R/2)=mvR/2mv(R-R/2)=mvR/2, giving L=32mvRL=\tfrac32 mvR. Afterwards the hoop turns about the edge with Ie=mR2+mR2=2mR2I_e=mR^2+mR^2=2mR^2, so ω′=L/Ie=3v/(4R)\omega'=L/I_e=3v/(4R) and the kinetic energy is 12Ieω′2=916mv2\tfrac12 I_e\omega'^2=\tfrac{9}{16}mv^2. To reach the top the centre must rise by R/2R/2, so 916mv2≥mgR/2\tfrac{9}{16}mv^2\ge mgR/2 and vmin=8gR/9v_{min}=\sqrt{8gR/9}. Option A ignores the collision loss (it equates mv2mv^2 to mgR/2mgR/2), which wrongly assumes all kinetic energy survives the impact.
