One or more options correct

A uniform thin rod of mass mm and length LL is hinged at its lower end and released from rest from the vertical position. Considering the instant when the rod is horizontal, choose the correct statement(s).
  1. A. The angular speed of the rod is 3g/L\sqrt{3g/L}.
  2. B. The vertical component of the hinge reaction is mg/4mg/4.
  3. C. The horizontal component of the hinge reaction is mg/2mg/2.
  4. D. The speed of the free end is 3gL\sqrt{3gL}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, D

Energy conservation: the centre of mass falls by L/2L/2, so mgL/2=12(13mL2)ω2mgL/2=\tfrac12\left(\tfrac13mL^2\right)\omega^2 and ω=3g/L\omega=\sqrt{3g/L}; A is true. The torque about the hinge is mgL/2mgL/2 when horizontal, so α=mgL/2mL2/3=3g2L\alpha=\dfrac{mgL/2}{mL^2/3}=\dfrac{3g}{2L}. The centre of mass has tangential (vertical) acceleration αL/2=3g/4\alpha L/2=3g/4 and centripetal (horizontal) acceleration ω2L/2=3g/2\omega^2L/2=3g/2. Vertically mg−Ny=m(3g/4)mg-N_y=m(3g/4), so Ny=mg/4N_y=mg/4; B is true. Horizontally Nx=mω2L/2=3mg/2N_x=m\omega^2L/2=3mg/2, not mg/2mg/2; C is false. The free-end speed is ωL=3gL\omega L=\sqrt{3gL}; D is true. Thus A, B and D are correct. Note that the hinge force is not simply mgmg: at the horizontal position the large centripetal requirement makes the horizontal component the larger one.
