Single correct option

A uniform solid cylinder of mass 2 kg2\ \mathrm{kg} rolls without slipping on a rough horizontal floor with centre speed 4 m s−14\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. A light spring of stiffness 300 N m−1300\ \mathrm{N\,m^{-1}} has one end fixed to a vertical wall and the other end attached to a frictionless horizontal axle through the cylinder's centre, so the spring axis passes through the centre and stays horizontal. The cylinder rolls (without slipping throughout) into the spring. The maximum compression of the spring is
  1. A. 0.33 m0.33\ \mathrm{m}
  2. B. 0.40 m0.40\ \mathrm{m}
  3. C. 0.28 m0.28\ \mathrm{m}
  4. D. 0.57 m0.57\ \mathrm{m}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 0.40 m0.40\ \mathrm{m}

The floor friction does no work because the contact point is instantaneously at rest, and the spring is conservative, so mechanical energy is conserved, but the energy of the cylinder is translational plus rotational. For a solid cylinder I=12mR2I=\tfrac12 mR^2 and rolling gives ω=v/R\omega=v/R, so K=12mv2+12Iω2=34mv2=34(2)(16)=24 JK=\tfrac12mv^2+\tfrac12 I\omega^2=\tfrac34 mv^2=\tfrac34(2)(16)=24\ \mathrm{J}. At maximum compression the cylinder is momentarily at rest (and so is not rotating), so all of this goes into the spring: 12kx2=24\tfrac12kx^2=24, giving x2=48/300=0.16x^2=48/300=0.16 and x=0.40 mx=0.40\ \mathrm{m}. Using only the translational energy 12mv2=16 J\tfrac12mv^2=16\ \mathrm{J} gives 0.33 m0.33\ \mathrm{m}; the other options do not correspond to the correct energy balance.
