Single correct option

Let f:R→Rf:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R be differentiable with f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y)+2xyf(x+y)=f(x)+f(y)+2xy for all real x,yx,y, and f′(0)=−2f'(0)=-2. The area of the region bounded by the curve y=f(x)y=f(x) and the line y=xy=x is
  1. A. 92\dfrac92
  2. B. 99
  3. C. 274\dfrac{27}{4}
  4. D. 43\dfrac43
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 92\dfrac92

Putting x=y=0x=y=0 gives f(0)=0f(0)=0. Then f′(x)=lim⁡h→0f(x+h)−f(x)h=lim⁡h→0[f(h)h+2x]=f′(0)+2x=2x−2f'(x)=\lim_{h\to0}\frac{f(x+h)-f(x)}h=\lim_{h\to0}\left[\frac{f(h)}h+2x\right]=f'(0)+2x=2x-2. Integrating with f(0)=0f(0)=0 gives f(x)=x2−2xf(x)=x^2-2x. The curve meets the line y=xy=x where x2−2x=xx^2-2x=x, i.e. at x=0x=0 and x=3x=3, and between them the line lies above the parabola. The area is ∫03[x−(x2−2x)]dx=∫03(3x−x2) dx=272−9=92\int_0^3\left[x-(x^2-2x)\right]dx=\int_0^3(3x-x^2)\,dx=\frac{27}2-9=\frac92. The value 43\frac43 is the area between the parabola and the xx-axis, and 99 is just ∫03x2 dx\int_0^3x^2\,dx, the parabola term alone.
