Let f(x)=x^2-2 for real x. The number of real values of x for which f(f(f(x)))=x but f(x)≠ x is ______.

Numerical answer

Let f(x)=x2−2f(x)=x^{2}-2 for real xx. The number of real values of xx for which f(f(f(x)))=xf(f(f(x)))=x but f(x)≠xf(x)\neq x is ______.
Show answer and solution

Answer: 6

Any real xx with f3(x)=xf^{3}(x)=x must satisfy ∣x∣≤2|x|\le2: if ∣x∣>2|x|>2 then f(x)>2f(x)>2, and ff is strictly increasing and larger than the argument on (2,∞)(2,\infty), so the iterates run away and never return. So put x=2cos⁡θx=2\cos\theta with θ∈[0,π]\theta\in[0,\pi]. Then f(x)=4cos⁡2θ−2=2cos⁡2θf(x)=4\cos^2\theta-2=2\cos2\theta, and f3(x)=2cos⁡8θf^{3}(x)=2\cos8\theta. The equation f3(x)=xf^3(x)=x becomes cos⁡8θ=cos⁡θ\cos8\theta=\cos\theta, giving 8θ=±θ+2πm8\theta=\pm\theta+2\pi m, i.e. θ=2πm7\theta=\dfrac{2\pi m}{7} or θ=2πm9\theta=\dfrac{2\pi m}{9} in [0,π][0,\pi]. First family: m=0,1,2,3m=0,1,2,3 gives 44 values; second: m=0,1,2,3,4m=0,1,2,3,4 gives 55 values; θ=0\theta=0 is common, so there are 88 distinct solutions (matching degree 88). Fixed points of ff itself: x2−x−2=0x^2-x-2=0, x=2,−1x=2,-1, which are two of these 88. Excluding them leaves 8−2=68-2=6 points of exact period 33.
