Numerical answer

Circles with centre in the first quadrant touch both coordinate axes. Consider those that also touch the circle x2+y2=1x^{2}+y^{2}=1 (the contact may be external or internal). Find the sum of the radii of all such circles. Give the answer correct to two decimal places.

Answer: 2.83

A circle touching both axes in the first quadrant has centre (r,r)(r,r) and radius rr, so its centre is at distance 2 r\sqrt2\,r from the origin. It touches the unit circle (centre OO, radius 11) when the distance between centres equals 1+r1+r (external contact) or ∣1−r∣|1-r| (internal contact). External: 2r=1+r\sqrt2r=1+r, so r=12−1=2+1r=\dfrac1{\sqrt2-1}=\sqrt2+1. Internal with the small circle inside the unit circle: 2r=1−r\sqrt2r=1-r, so r=12+1=2−1≈0.414r=\dfrac1{\sqrt2+1}=\sqrt2-1\approx0.414. Internal with the unit circle inside the other circle: 2r=r−1\sqrt2r=r-1 gives r<0r<0, impossible. The valid radii are 2+1\sqrt2+1 and 2−1\sqrt2-1, with sum 22≈2.832\sqrt2\approx2.83. Substituting both values back confirms each distance condition.
