Single correct option

One mole of a monatomic ideal gas is taken quasi-statically through a process in which its pressure is proportional to its volume, P=αVP=\alpha V, until the volume has doubled. The fraction of the heat absorbed by the gas that is converted into work done by the gas is
  1. A. 15\dfrac15
  2. B. 13\dfrac13
  3. C. 14\dfrac14
  4. D. 12\dfrac12
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 14\dfrac14

For P=αVP=\alpha V we have PV=αV2=RTPV=\alpha V^2=RT, so T∝V2T\propto V^2 and the temperature rises by a factor 4. With V0→2V0V_0\to 2V_0 and P0=αV0P_0=\alpha V_0, the temperature change is ΔT=3P0V0/R\Delta T=3P_0V_0/R. The work is W=∫αV dV=32αV02=32P0V0W=\int \alpha V\,dV=\tfrac32\alpha V_0^2=\tfrac32 P_0V_0. The internal energy change is ΔU=32RΔT=92P0V0\Delta U=\tfrac32 R\Delta T=\tfrac92P_0V_0, so Q=ΔU+W=6P0V0Q=\Delta U+W=6P_0V_0. Equivalently the molar heat capacity of this process is C=Cv+R/2=2RC=C_v+R/2=2R, giving the same Q=2RΔT=6P0V0Q=2R\Delta T=6P_0V_0. Hence W/Q=1.5/6=1/4W/Q=1.5/6=1/4. Note that the process is neither isobaric nor isothermal, so the heat capacity must be derived from the process equation rather than recalled. Using Cp=52RC_p=\tfrac52R by mistake gives 1/51/5, while taking Q=ΔUQ=\Delta U gives 1/31/3.
