One or more options correct

nn moles of a monatomic ideal gas, initially at pressure P0P_0, volume V0V_0 and temperature T0T_0 (state A), execute the cycle A→\toB→\toC→\toA. A→\toB is an isothermal expansion to volume 2V02V_0; B→\toC is an isobaric compression back to volume V0V_0; C→\toA is an isochoric process that restores the initial state. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The heat absorbed by the gas during A→\toB is P0V0ln⁡2P_0V_0\ln 2
  2. B. The heat released by the gas during B→\toC is 54P0V0\dfrac{5}{4}P_0V_0
  3. C. The heat absorbed by the gas during C→\toA is 32P0V0\dfrac{3}{2}P_0V_0
  4. D. The thermal efficiency of the cycle is about 13%
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B, D

Use P0V0=nRT0P_0V_0=nRT_0. In A→\toB (isothermal, ΔU=0\Delta U=0) QAB=WAB=nRT0ln⁡2=P0V0ln⁡2Q_{AB}=W_{AB}=nRT_0\ln2=P_0V_0\ln 2, so (A) is correct. At B the pressure is P0/2P_0/2 and TB=T0T_B=T_0; the isobaric compression to V0V_0 cools the gas to TC=T0/2T_C=T_0/2. Then QBC=nCpΔT=52nR(−T02)=−54P0V0Q_{BC}=nC_p\Delta T=\tfrac52nR(-\tfrac{T_0}{2})=-\tfrac54P_0V_0, i.e. heat 54P0V0\tfrac54P_0V_0 is released, so (B) is correct. In C→\toA the gas is heated at constant volume: QCA=32nR⋅T02=34P0V0Q_{CA}=\tfrac32nR\cdot\tfrac{T_0}{2}=\tfrac34P_0V_0, not 32P0V0\tfrac32P_0V_0, so (C) is wrong. Net work =(ln⁡2−12)P0V0≈0.193P0V0=(\ln2-\tfrac12)P_0V_0\approx0.193P_0V_0 and heat absorbed is QAB+QCA=(0.693+0.75)P0V0=1.443P0V0Q_{AB}+Q_{CA}=(0.693+0.75)P_0V_0=1.443P_0V_0, giving efficiency ≈0.134\approx0.134, i.e. about 13%, so (D) is correct. Answer: A, B and D. Because the net work is positive and the cycle runs A, B, C, A, it is a heat engine, consistent with a positive efficiency.
