Single correct option

The line L: x−12=y−2−1=z−1L:\ \dfrac{x-1}{2}=\dfrac{y-2}{-1}=\dfrac{z}{-1} is reflected in the plane Π\Pi passing through the points (9,0,0)(9,0,0), (0,9,0)(0,9,0) and (0,0,9)(0,0,9). The shortest distance between LL and its image is
  1. A. 232\sqrt3
  2. B. 434\sqrt3
  3. C. 636\sqrt3
  4. D. 3\sqrt3
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 434\sqrt3

The plane through the three given points is x+y+z=9x+y+z=9 with normal (1,1,1)(1,1,1). The direction of LL is (2,−1,−1)(2,-1,-1) and (2,−1,−1)⋅(1,1,1)=0(2,-1,-1)\cdot(1,1,1)=0, so LL is parallel to Π\Pi. The image line is therefore parallel to LL and lies at the same distance on the other side of the plane. The point (1,2,0)(1,2,0) on LL has distance ∣1+2+0−9∣3=63=23\dfrac{|1+2+0-9|}{\sqrt3}=\dfrac{6}{\sqrt3}=2\sqrt3 from Π\Pi. Hence the distance between LL and its image is twice this, 43≈6.934\sqrt3\approx 6.93. The option 232\sqrt3 is only the distance of LL from the mirror, a common slip.
