Let S be the sphere x^2+y^2+z^2-2x-4y-6z+10=0 and let Pi be the plane x+y+z=3. The plane Pi cuts S in a circle C.

One or more options correct

Let SS be the sphere x2+y2+z2−2x−4y−6z+10=0x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2}-2x-4y-6z+10=0 and let Π\Pi be the plane x+y+z=3x+y+z=3. The plane Π\Pi cuts SS in a circle CC. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The circle CC has radius 11
  2. B. The centre of CC is (1,1,1)(1,1,1)
  3. C. The sphere through CC and the origin has radius 213\dfrac{\sqrt{21}}{3}
  4. D. The least distance of a point of SS from Π\Pi is 2−32-\sqrt3
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, C

The sphere has centre (1,2,3)(1,2,3) and radius 1+4+9−10=2\sqrt{1+4+9-10}=2. The distance of the centre from Π\Pi is ∣6−3∣/3=3|6-3|/\sqrt3=\sqrt3, so the circle has radius 4−3=1\sqrt{4-3}=1: (A) true. The centre of CC is the foot of the perpendicular, (1,2,3)−33(1,1,1)=(0,1,2)(1,2,3)-\frac{3}{3}(1,1,1)=(0,1,2), not (1,1,1)(1,1,1): (B) false. Spheres through CC have the form S+λ(x+y+z−3)=0S+\lambda(x+y+z-3)=0; passing through the origin needs 10−3λ=010-3\lambda=0, so λ=103\lambda=\frac{10}{3}. Its centre is (−23,13,43)\left(-\frac23,\frac13,\frac43\right) and its radius squared is 1+4+169−0=219\frac{1+4+16}{9}-0=\frac{21}{9}, so the radius is 213\frac{\sqrt{21}}{3}: (C) true. Since Π\Pi cuts SS, points of SS lie on Π\Pi and the least distance is 00, not 2−32-\sqrt3: (D) false.
