The sphere S: x^2+y^2+z^2-2x+4y-6z-2=0 is cut by the plane Pi: 2x-y+2z=1 in a circle Gamma.

One or more options correct

The sphere S: x2+y2+z2−2x+4y−6z−2=0S:\ x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2}-2x+4y-6z-2=0 is cut by the plane Π: 2x−y+2z=1\Pi:\ 2x-y+2z=1 in a circle Γ\Gamma. Which of the following is (are) correct?
  1. A. The radius of Γ\Gamma is 7\sqrt7
  2. B. The centre of Γ\Gamma is (−1,−1,1)(-1,-1,1)
  3. C. The plane 2x−y+2z=−122x-y+2z=-12 touches SS
  4. D. The greatest distance of a point of SS from Π\Pi is 88
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B

Completing squares gives (x−1)2+(y+2)2+(z−3)2=16(x-1)^{2}+(y+2)^{2}+(z-3)^{2}=16, so the centre of SS is C(1,−2,3)C(1,-2,3) and its radius is 44. For Π\Pi with normal n⃗=(2,−1,2)\vec n=(2,-1,2), ∣n⃗∣=3|\vec n|=3, the distance from CC is ∣2+2+6−1∣3=3\frac{|2+2+6-1|}{3}=3. Hence the radius of Γ\Gamma is 16−9=7\sqrt{16-9}=\sqrt7 (A true). The centre of Γ\Gamma is the foot of the perpendicular from CC: C−99n⃗=(−1,−1,1)C-\frac{9}{9}\vec n=(-1,-1,1) (B true). Planes parallel to Π\Pi have the form 2x−y+2z=k2x-y+2z=k and touch SS when ∣10−k∣3=4\frac{|10-k|}{3}=4, i.e. k=22k=22 or k=−2k=-2; k=−12k=-12 gives distance 223>4\frac{22}{3}>4, so it does not touch (C false). The farthest point of SS from Π\Pi lies on the far side of the centre at distance 3+4=73+4=7, not 88 (D false). Numerical checks agree. Answer: A, B.
