Numerical answer

In an experiment to find gg with a simple pendulum, the length of the thread is measured as 96.0 cm96.0\ \mathrm{cm} with a possible error of 0.4 cm0.4\ \mathrm{cm} and the diameter of the spherical bob as 8.0 cm8.0\ \mathrm{cm} with a possible error of 0.2 cm0.2\ \mathrm{cm}. The time for 2020 oscillations is measured as 40.0 s40.0\ \mathrm{s} with a possible error of 0.5 s0.5\ \mathrm{s}. The maximum percentage error in the value of gg obtained from g=4π2L/T2g=4\pi^2L/T^2 is

Answer: 3

The effective length of the pendulum is the thread length plus the bob radius, L=l+d2=96.0+4.0=100.0 cmL=l+\dfrac d2=96.0+4.0=100.0\ \mathrm{cm}. Its maximum error is the sum of the absolute errors of the contributions: ΔL=Δl+Δd2=0.4+0.1=0.5 cm\Delta L=\Delta l+\dfrac{\Delta d}{2}=0.4+0.1=0.5\ \mathrm{cm}, so ΔLL=0.5%\dfrac{\Delta L}{L}=0.5\%. The period is T=40.0/20=2.00 sT=40.0/20=2.00\ \mathrm{s} with ΔT=0.5/20=0.025 s\Delta T=0.5/20=0.025\ \mathrm{s}, i.e. a fractional error ΔTT=0.540.0=1.25%\dfrac{\Delta T}{T}=\dfrac{0.5}{40.0}=1.25\%. Since g∝L T−2g\propto L\,T^{-2}, the maximum fractional error is Δgg=ΔLL+2ΔTT=0.5%+2×1.25%=3.0%\dfrac{\Delta g}{g}=\dfrac{\Delta L}{L}+2\dfrac{\Delta T}{T}=0.5\%+2\times1.25\%=3.0\%. The answer is therefore 33. Note that the error in the time is doubled because TT enters squared, and the errors are always added, never subtracted, when the maximum error is asked.
