Numerical answer

The resistivity of a wire is found from ρ=πd2V4IL\rho=\dfrac{\pi d^{2}V}{4IL}. The voltmeter reads V=2.00±0.02 VV=2.00\pm0.02\ \mathrm{V} and the ammeter I=0.50±0.01 AI=0.50\pm0.01\ \mathrm{A}. The length is L=50.0±0.5 cmL=50.0\pm0.5\ \mathrm{cm}. The diameter is measured with a screw gauge of least count 0.01 mm0.01\ \mathrm{mm}; its zero error is +0.02 mm+0.02\ \mathrm{mm} and the observed reading with the wire is 0.52 mm0.52\ \mathrm{mm}. Taking the uncertainty of each instrument reading as its stated value (the least count for the screw gauge), find the maximum percentage error in ρ\rho.

Answer: 8

The true diameter is the observed reading minus the zero error: d=0.52−0.02=0.50 mmd=0.52-0.02=0.50\ \mathrm{mm}. The zero correction is exact, so the uncertainty in dd is the least count, 0.01 mm0.01\ \mathrm{mm}. For ρ=πd2V/(4IL)\rho=\pi d^2V/(4IL) the maximum fractional error is Δρρ=2Δdd+ΔVV+ΔII+ΔLL\dfrac{\Delta\rho}{\rho}=2\dfrac{\Delta d}{d}+\dfrac{\Delta V}{V}+\dfrac{\Delta I}{I}+\dfrac{\Delta L}{L}. The individual terms are 2×0.010.50=4%2\times\dfrac{0.01}{0.50}=4\%, 0.022.00=1%\dfrac{0.02}{2.00}=1\%, 0.010.50=2%\dfrac{0.01}{0.50}=2\% and 0.550.0=1%\dfrac{0.5}{50.0}=1\%. Adding the errors of products and quotients, the maximum error is 4+1+2+1=8%4+1+2+1=8\%. Note that using the raw reading 0.52 mm0.52\ \mathrm{mm} would give 3.85%3.85\% for the diameter term and the wrong total; the zero error must be removed before computing the relative error, and the diameter appears squared, which doubles its contribution.
