One or more options correct

In a Young's double-slit experiment the slit separation is 1.0 mm1.0\ \mathrm{mm}, the screen is 1.0 m1.0\ \mathrm{m} away and the wavelength is 600 nm600\ \mathrm{nm}. A thin transparent slab of refractive index 1.51.5 and thickness 15 μm15\ \mu\mathrm{m} is now placed directly in front of one of the slits, perpendicular to the light path. The two slits emit waves of equal amplitude. Which of the following is/are correct?
  1. A. The fringe pattern shifts towards the side of the slit covered by the slab.
  2. B. The centre of the fringe pattern shifts by 7.5 mm7.5\ \mathrm{mm} on the screen.
  3. C. The point on the screen that was the original central maximum is now a bright fringe of maximum intensity.
  4. D. The fringe width decreases to 0.4 mm0.4\ \mathrm{mm}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: A, B

The slab adds an extra optical path (μ−1)t=0.5×15 μm=7.5 μm(\mu-1)t=0.5\times15\ \mu\mathrm{m}=7.5\ \mu\mathrm{m} on its own path, so the point of zero net path difference moves toward the covered slit: (A) is true. The shift is (μ−1)tDd=7.5×10−6×110−3=7.5 mm\dfrac{(\mu-1)tD}{d}=\dfrac{7.5\times10^{-6}\times1}{10^{-3}}=7.5\ \mathrm{mm}, so (B) is true. At the old central point the path difference is 7.5 μm/600 nm=12.57.5\ \mu\mathrm{m}/600\ \mathrm{nm}=12.5 wavelengths, a half-integral number, giving destructive interference and zero intensity, so (C) is false. The fringe width β=λD/d=0.6 mm\beta=\lambda D/d=0.6\ \mathrm{mm} depends only on λ\lambda, DD and dd and is unchanged, so (D) is false.
