One or more options correct

A source emitting sound of frequency 680 Hz680\ \mathrm{Hz} moves at 20 m s−120\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}} directly towards a large flat wall. A stationary observer stands behind the source on the line joining the source and the wall. The speed of sound is 340 m s−1340\ \mathrm{m\,s^{-1}}. Which of the following statements is/are correct?
  1. A. The observer hears the direct sound at 720 Hz720\ \mathrm{Hz}.
  2. B. The observer hears the sound reflected from the wall at about 722 Hz722\ \mathrm{Hz}.
  3. C. The beat frequency heard by the observer is 40 Hz40\ \mathrm{Hz}.
  4. D. The wavelength of the sound reaching the wall is 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m}.
Show answer and solution

Answer: B

The source moves away from the observer, so the direct sound is Doppler shifted down: f1=680×340340+20=642 Hzf_1=680\times\dfrac{340}{340+20}=642\ \mathrm{Hz}, hence (A) is false. The wall is a stationary receiver ahead of the source, so it receives f2=680×340340−20=722.5 Hzf_2=680\times\dfrac{340}{340-20}=722.5\ \mathrm{Hz}, and it re-emits the same frequency; the observer, being at rest, hears 722 Hz722\ \mathrm{Hz}, so (B) is true. The beat frequency is f2−f1=722.5−642.2=80.3 Hzf_2-f_1=722.5-642.2=80.3\ \mathrm{Hz}, so (C) is false. The wavelength in the medium ahead of the source is (v−vs)/f=320/680=0.471 m(v-v_s)/f=320/680=0.471\ \mathrm{m}, not 0.50 m0.50\ \mathrm{m}, so (D) is false. Only (B) is correct.
