Numerical answer

In a Young's double-slit experiment the whole apparatus is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.251.25. A thin transparent film of refractive index 1.51.5 and thickness 12 μm12\ \mu\mathrm{m} is placed in front of one slit. The vacuum wavelength of the light is 600 nm600\ \mathrm{nm}. The central maximum shifts by how many fringe widths?
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

The geometric paths from the slits are equal, but the film replaces a liquid layer of the same thickness tt in one path. The extra optical path is Δ=(μf−μl)t=(1.5−1.25)(12 μm)=3 μm\Delta=(\mu_f-\mu_l)t=(1.5-1.25)(12\ \mu\mathrm{m})=3\ \mu\mathrm{m}. Since one fringe corresponds to a change of optical path of one vacuum wavelength λ0=600 nm\lambda_0=600\ \mathrm{nm} (the fringe width β=λ0D/(μld)\beta=\lambda_0D/(\mu_l d) arises from the geometric path difference dsin⁡θd\sin\theta multiplied by μl\mu_l), the shift in number of fringes is N=Δ/λ0=3000/600=5N=\Delta/\lambda_0=3000/600=5. The central maximum moves by 55 fringe widths towards the slit covered by the film. Using (μf−1)t/λ(\mu_f-1)t/\lambda in air units gives the wrong value 1010.
