- Year of passing Class 12. You can apply if you passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027. If you passed in 2024 or earlier, you cannot sit JEE Main 2027. The passing year is the year your result first showed 'pass'.
- Age. There is no age limit for the exam. Some institutes set their own age rules for admission, so check those.
- Attempts. In effect you get up to three years (the year you finish Class 12 and the two years after), with two sessions each year. You may take one or both sessions; your better total NTA score counts. Appearing twice in the same session leads to cancellation.
- Subjects for B.E./B.Tech. For NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, Class 12 must include Physics and Mathematics, plus one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a Technical Vocational subject, and a language. (Per the 2026 bulletin; check the 2027 JoSAA rules.)
- Subjects for B.Arch and B.Planning. B.Arch needs Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12. B.Planning needs Mathematics, with at least 50% in Mathematics and 50% overall. (Per the 2026 bulletin.)
- 75% rule for NIT/IIIT seats. To take a seat at an NIT, IIIT or other centrally funded institute you need at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in the top 20 percentile of your board. This is an admission rule, not an exam rule: you can still take JEE Main without it.
