Single correct option

The molecular formula C4H11N\mathrm{C_4H_{11}N} has several amine isomers. Let xx be the number of isomers that give a benzenesulfonamide soluble in aqueous NaOH, and yy the number among those that are optically active. The value of x+yx+y is
  1. A. 5
  2. B. 3
  3. C. 4
  4. D. 6

Answer: (A) 5

The benzenesulfonamide of an amine dissolves in alkali only if it still has an N-H, i.e. for primary amines (Hinsberg test). Primary amines of C4H11N\mathrm{C_4H_{11}N}: butan-1-amine, butan-2-amine, 2-methylpropan-1-amine and 2-methylpropan-2-amine, so x=4x=4. Only butan-2-amine has a stereocentre (C-2 with H,NH2,CH3,C2H5\mathrm{H, NH_2, CH_3, C_2H_5}), so y=1y=1. Thus x+y=5x+y=5.
