Single correct option

For x=1x=1, the numerically greatest term in the expansion of (2+3x)12(2+3x)^{12} is the kthk^{\text{th}} term. The value of kk is
  1. A. 99
  2. B. 88
  3. C. 66
  4. D. 77
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 88

Write Tr+1=(12r)212−r(3x)rT_{r+1}=\binom{12}{r}2^{12-r}(3x)^r. For x=1x=1 the ratio of consecutive terms is Tr+1Tr=13−rr⋅32\dfrac{T_{r+1}}{T_r}=\dfrac{13-r}{r}\cdot\dfrac32. The terms keep increasing while this ratio exceeds 11: 3(13−r)2r>1  ⟺  39−3r>2r  ⟺  r<7.8\dfrac{3(13-r)}{2r}>1\iff39-3r>2r\iff r<7.8. So Tr+1>TrT_{r+1}>T_r for r≤7r\le7, i.e. the terms increase up to T8T_8, and T9<T8T_9<T_8 because the ratio at r=8r=8 is 3⋅516<1\dfrac{3\cdot5}{16}<1. Hence the greatest term is the 8th8^{\text{th}} and k=8k=8. (Numerically T8=55427328T_8=55427328 and T7=51963120T_7=51963120.) The choice k=9k=9 would come from reading r<7.8r<7.8 as r+1=9r+1=9.
