Single correct option

Twenty-four identical cells, each of emf 1.5 V1.5\ \mathrm{V} and internal resistance 1 Ω1\ \Omega, are arranged in mm parallel rows of nn cells in series each, with mn=24mn = 24, and connected to an external resistance of 6 Ω6\ \Omega. The largest current that can be obtained through the external resistance is
  1. A. 1.2 A1.2\ \mathrm{A}
  2. B. 1.5 A1.5\ \mathrm{A}
  3. C. 2.0 A2.0\ \mathrm{A}
  4. D. 3.0 A3.0\ \mathrm{A}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1.5 A1.5\ \mathrm{A}

The current is I=nER+nr/mI = \dfrac{nE}{R + nr/m}. It is a maximum when the external resistance equals the equivalent internal resistance: R=nr/mR = nr/m, i.e. n/m=6n/m = 6. With mn=24mn=24 this gives n=12n=12, m=2m=2. Then I=12×1.56+6=1.5 AI = \dfrac{12\times1.5}{6+6} = 1.5\ \mathrm{A}. Other groupings such as n=24,m=1n=24,m=1 or n=6,m=4n=6,m=4 give only 1.2 A1.2\ \mathrm{A}, confirming the maximum.
