Numerical answer

The same quantity of electricity is passed through two electrolytic cells in series, one containing AgNO3\mathrm{AgNO_3} solution and the other CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO_4} solution, using inert electrodes. If 2.16 g2.16\ \mathrm g of Ag is deposited, the mass of Cu deposited, in milligrams, is (atomic masses: Ag =108=108, Cu =63.5=63.5)
Show answer and solution

Answer: 635

Moles of Ag =2.16/108=0.020=2.16/108=0.020, so charge corresponds to 0.0200.020 mol e−e^- (as Ag++e−→Ag\mathrm{Ag^++e^-\to Ag}). For copper, Cu2++2e−→Cu\mathrm{Cu^{2+}+2e^-\to Cu}, moles of Cu =0.020/2=0.010=0.020/2=0.010. Mass =0.010×63.5=0.635 g=635 mg=0.010\times63.5=0.635\ \mathrm g=635\ \mathrm{mg}.
