Single correct option

A satellite moves in a circular orbit of radius rr around the Earth. A short burn reduces its speed to half of the orbital speed without changing its direction. In the new elliptical orbit, the minimum distance of the satellite from the centre of the Earth is
  1. A. r2\dfrac{r}{2}
  2. B. r4\dfrac{r}{4}
  3. C. r7\dfrac{r}{7}
  4. D. r8\dfrac{r}{8}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) r7\dfrac{r}{7}

With v02=GM/rv_0^2 = GM/r, the burn point becomes the apogee (velocity perpendicular to the radius, speed below circular). Let the perigee distance be xrxr with speed v′v'. Angular momentum: r⋅v02=xr v′r\cdot\tfrac{v_0}{2} = xr\,v', so v′=v02xv' = \dfrac{v_0}{2x}. Energy: 12⋅v024−GMr=12v024x2−GMxr\tfrac12\cdot\tfrac{v_0^2}{4} - \dfrac{GM}{r} = \tfrac12\dfrac{v_0^2}{4x^2} - \dfrac{GM}{xr}. Dividing by v02v_0^2: 18−1=18x2−1x\dfrac18 - 1 = \dfrac{1}{8x^2} - \dfrac1x, which gives 7x2−8x+1=07x^2 - 8x + 1 = 0, so x=1x = 1 (the burn point) or x=17x = \tfrac17. Minimum distance =r/7= r/7.
