Single correct option

A 2.00 g2.00\ \mathrm{g} mixture of CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} and MgCO3\mathrm{MgCO_3} is strongly heated until both decompose completely to oxides, releasing 0.947 g0.947\ \mathrm{g} of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}. Taking molar masses CaCO3=100\mathrm{CaCO_3}=100, MgCO3=84\mathrm{MgCO_3}=84 and CO2=44 g mol−1\mathrm{CO_2}=44\ \mathrm{g\,mol^{-1}}, the mass percentage of CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} in the mixture is closest to
  1. A. 40%40\%
  2. B. 50%50\%
  3. C. 60%60\%
  4. D. 75%75\%
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 60%60\%

Let CaCO3=x\mathrm{CaCO_3}=x g, so MgCO3=2−x\mathrm{MgCO_3}=2-x g. Each mole of carbonate gives one mole of CO2\mathrm{CO_2}, so 44(x100+2−x84)=0.94744\left(\frac{x}{100}+\frac{2-x}{84}\right)=0.947. Hence x100+2−x84=0.02152\frac{x}{100}+\frac{2-x}{84}=0.02152. Multiplying by 8400: 84x+100(2−x)=180.884x+100(2-x)=180.8, i.e. 200−16x=180.8200-16x=180.8 and x=1.2x=1.2 g. Mass percentage =1.2/2.00×100=60%=1.2/2.00\times100=60\%. Shortcut: if the sample were pure MgCO3\mathrm{MgCO_3} it would give 1.0481.048 g and if pure CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3} 0.880.88 g, so the observed value lies about 60%60\% of the way towards the lighter-yielding CaCO3\mathrm{CaCO_3}.
