Single correct option

A biconvex thin lens made of glass of refractive index 1.51.5 has radii of curvature 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm} and 30 cm30\ \mathrm{cm}. When the lens is completely immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.61.6, its focal length is
  1. A. +192 cm+192\ \mathrm{cm}
  2. B. −192 cm-192\ \mathrm{cm} (diverging)
  3. C. −24 cm-24\ \mathrm{cm}
  4. D. −96 cm-96\ \mathrm{cm}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) −192 cm-192\ \mathrm{cm} (diverging)

Use the lens maker's formula with the relative refractive index μrel=1.5/1.6\mu_{rel}=1.5/1.6: 1f=(μrel−1)(1R1−1R2)\dfrac1f=\left(\mu_{rel}-1\right)\left(\dfrac1{R_1}-\dfrac1{R_2}\right) with R1=+20R_1=+20 and R2=−30 cmR_2=-30\ \mathrm{cm} for a biconvex lens. Here μrel−1=−116\mu_{rel}-1 = -\tfrac1{16} and 120+130=112\tfrac1{20}+\tfrac1{30}=\tfrac1{12}, so 1f=−1192\dfrac1f=-\dfrac1{192} and f=−192 cmf=-192\ \mathrm{cm}. The lens, convergent in air with f=24 cmf=24\ \mathrm{cm}, becomes divergent because the liquid is optically denser than the glass.
