Single correct option

A point-like luminous object is 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} in front of a thin convex lens of focal length 30 cm30\ \mathrm{cm}. A plane mirror, perpendicular to the axis, is placed 40 cm40\ \mathrm{cm} behind the lens. Looking back through the lens from the object side, the final image formed after light has passed through the lens, reflected from the mirror and passed through the lens again has
  1. A. magnification 33, virtual, 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens on the mirror side
  2. B. magnification 33, real, 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens
  3. C. magnification 11, real, 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens
  4. D. magnification 13\tfrac13, virtual, 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens on the mirror side
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) magnification 33, virtual, 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens on the mirror side

First pass: 1v=130−160\dfrac1v=\dfrac1{30}-\dfrac1{60}, so the image would form 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} behind the lens (m1=−1m_1=-1). The mirror at 40 cm40\ \mathrm{cm} intercepts the converging beam 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm} before that point, so the reflected rays converge to a real point 20 cm20\ \mathrm{cm} beyond the mirror in front of it, i.e. 40−20=20 cm40-20=20\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens on the mirror side (m=+1m=+1 for the mirror). This is a real object for the second pass at u=−20 cmu=-20\ \mathrm{cm}: 1v=130−120=−160\dfrac1v=\dfrac1{30}-\dfrac1{20}=-\dfrac1{60}, so the image is virtual, 60 cm60\ \mathrm{cm} from the lens on the mirror side, with m2=vu=3m_2=\dfrac vu=3. Net magnification m1⋅1⋅m2=−3m_1\cdot1\cdot m_2=-3, magnitude 33.
