Single correct option

Unpolarised light of intensity I0I_0 falls on a polariser P1P_1. A second polariser P3P_3 with its axis perpendicular to that of P1P_1 is placed behind it, and then a third polariser P2P_2 is inserted between them with its axis at 30∘30^\circ to the axis of P1P_1. The intensity of the light emerging from P3P_3 is
  1. A. I08\dfrac{I_0}{8}
  2. B. 3I032\dfrac{3I_0}{32}
  3. C. 3I016\dfrac{3I_0}{16}
  4. D. 00

Answer: (B) 3I032\dfrac{3I_0}{32}

The first polariser transmits half of the unpolarised intensity: I1=I02I_1=\dfrac{I_0}{2}. By Malus's law, the intensity after P2P_2 (axis at 30∘30^\circ to P1P_1) is I2=I1cos⁡230∘=I02⋅34=3I08I_2=I_1\cos^230^\circ=\dfrac{I_0}{2}\cdot\dfrac34=\dfrac{3I_0}{8}. The axis of P3P_3 is at 90∘90^\circ to P1P_1, so it makes 60∘60^\circ with P2P_2, and I3=I2cos⁡260∘=3I08×14=3I032I_3=I_2\cos^260^\circ=\dfrac{3I_0}{8}\times\dfrac14=\dfrac{3I_0}{32}. Without P2P_2 the crossed pair would block all light; the middle polariser rotates the plane of polarisation in two steps. The value I08\dfrac{I_0}{8} is the result for the 45∘45^\circ arrangement.
