Single correct option

The number of ways to distribute 1010 identical sweets among 44 children so that every child gets at least 11 sweet and no child gets more than 44 sweets is
  1. A. 8484
  2. B. 5656
  3. C. 4444
  4. D. 4040
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 4444

Let xix_i be the sweets of child ii and put yi=xi−1y_i=x_i-1, so 0≤yi≤30\le y_i\le3 and y1+y2+y3+y4=6y_1+y_2+y_3+y_4=6. Without the upper bound the count is (93)=84\binom{9}{3}=84. Now remove the cases where some yi≥4y_i\ge4: write yi=4+zy_i=4+z, so z+(other three)=2z+(\text{other three})=2, which has (53)=10\binom{5}{3}=10 solutions, and there are 44 choices of the child. Two children cannot both have y≥4y\ge4 since 8>68>6, so there is no overlap to add back. The answer is 84−4⋅10=4484-4\cdot10=44.
