Single correct option

A uniform thin rod of length LL lies at rest on a smooth horizontal table. It receives a sharp horizontal impulse perpendicular to its length at a point at distance L/3L/3 from its centre. Immediately afterwards, the point of the rod that is instantaneously at rest is at a distance from the struck point equal to
  1. A. L4\dfrac{L}{4}
  2. B. L2\dfrac{L}{2}
  3. C. 7L12\dfrac{7L}{12}
  4. D. 3L4\dfrac{3L}{4}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 7L12\dfrac{7L}{12}

Let the impulse JJ act at distance x=L/3x=L/3 from the centre. Then vcm=J/mv_{cm}=J/m and, from the angular impulse about the centre, ω=JxmL2/12\omega = \dfrac{Jx}{mL^2/12}. A point at distance yy from the centre on the side opposite to the impulse has velocity vcm−ωyv_{cm}-\omega y, which vanishes when y=vcmω=L212x=L24L=L4y = \dfrac{v_{cm}}{\omega} = \dfrac{L^2}{12x} = \dfrac{L^2}{4L} = \dfrac{L}{4}. This point lies on the other side of the centre from the impulse, so its distance from the struck point is x+y=L3+L4=7L12x+y = \dfrac{L}{3}+\dfrac{L}{4} = \dfrac{7L}{12}. The value L/4L/4 is only its distance from the centre.
