Single correct option

Let A={1,2,3,4,5}A=\{1,2,3,4,5\}. The number of equivalence relations on AA that contain (1,2)(1,2) but do not contain (1,3)(1,3) is
  1. A. 66
  2. B. 1010
  3. C. 1414
  4. D. 1515
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 1010

An equivalence relation on AA corresponds to a partition of AA. Since (1,2)(1,2) is present, 11 and 22 lie in the same block, so treat them as one object XX. Equivalence relations containing (1,2)(1,2) then correspond to partitions of {X,3,4,5}\{X,3,4,5\}, which number the Bell number B4=15B_4=15. Those that also contain (1,3)(1,3) put XX and 33 in one block, i.e. partitions of a 33-object set, B3=5B_3=5. Hence the required number is 15−5=1015-5=10.
