Single correct option

A block of mass MM performs SHM of amplitude AA on a smooth horizontal surface, attached to a spring. At the instant it passes through the mean position, a lump of putty of mass M/3M/3 is dropped on it from directly above and sticks. The new amplitude of oscillation is
  1. A. 34A\dfrac{3}{4}A
  2. B. AA
  3. C. 23A\dfrac{2}{\sqrt3}A
  4. D. 32A\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}A
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 32A\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}A

The putty has no horizontal momentum, so horizontal momentum is conserved at the mean position: Mv=43Mv′Mv=\tfrac43Mv', so v′=34vv'=\tfrac34v with v=ωAv=\omega A. The new angular frequency is ω′=k/(4M/3)=ω3/4\omega'=\sqrt{k/(4M/3)}=\omega\sqrt{3/4}. At the mean position speed is maximum, so A′=v′ω′=34ωA32ω=32AA'=\dfrac{v'}{\omega'}=\dfrac{\tfrac34\omega A}{\tfrac{\sqrt3}{2}\omega}=\dfrac{\sqrt3}{2}A. (Equivalent: energy falls to 34\tfrac34, and A′∝E′A'\propto\sqrt{E'} at fixed kk gives the same.)
