A mixture contains 1 mole of helium (monatomic) and 2 moles of oxygen (diatomic, rigid), both treated as ideal gases.

Single correct option

A mixture contains 11 mole of helium (monatomic) and 22 moles of oxygen (diatomic, rigid), both treated as ideal gases. The ratio CP/CVC_P/C_V of the mixture is
  1. A. 1.401.40
  2. B. 1.501.50
  3. C. 1712\dfrac{17}{12}
  4. D. 1913\dfrac{19}{13}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 1913\dfrac{19}{13}

Internal energy per kelvin adds for non-reacting gases, so the molar CVC_V of the mixture is the mole-weighted average: CV=1×32R+2×52R3=6.5R3C_V=\dfrac{1\times\frac32R+2\times\frac52R}{3}=\dfrac{6.5R}{3}. For any ideal-gas mixture CP−CV=RC_P-C_V=R per mole, so CP=6.5R3+R=9.5R3C_P=\dfrac{6.5R}{3}+R=\dfrac{9.5R}{3}. Therefore γ=CPCV=9.56.5=1913≈1.46\gamma=\dfrac{C_P}{C_V}=\dfrac{9.5}{6.5}=\dfrac{19}{13}\approx1.46. Averaging the γ\gamma values directly, 1.67+2(1.4)3=1.49\dfrac{1.67+2(1.4)}{3}=1.49, is wrong because γ\gamma itself is not additive.
