Single correct option

A vertical tower stands on level ground. Two points AA and BB lie on a straight line through the foot of the tower, on the same side of it, with BB farther from the tower and AB=40AB=40 m. The angles of elevation of the top of the tower from AA and BB are 60∘60^\circ and 30∘30^\circ respectively. The height of the tower, in metres, is
  1. A. 2020
  2. B. 403\dfrac{40}{\sqrt3}
  3. C. 20320\sqrt3
  4. D. 40340\sqrt3
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 20320\sqrt3

Let the tower have height hh and let the foot be OO. From AA the angle of elevation is 60∘60^\circ, so OA=htan⁡60∘=h3OA=\dfrac{h}{\tan60^\circ}=\dfrac h{\sqrt3}. From BB the angle is 30∘30^\circ, so OB=htan⁡30∘=h3OB=\dfrac h{\tan30^\circ}=h\sqrt3. Since AA and BB are on the same side of the foot and BB is farther, AB=OB−OA=h3−h3=2h3AB=OB-OA=h\sqrt3-\dfrac h{\sqrt3}=\dfrac{2h}{\sqrt3}. Setting this equal to 4040 gives h=203h=20\sqrt3 m. Check: OB=60OB=60 m, OA=20OA=20 m, so AB=40AB=40 m, and tan⁡30∘=20360\tan30^\circ=\dfrac{20\sqrt3}{60}. Adding the two distances (as if AA and BB were on opposite sides) would give h=103h=10\sqrt3.
