A vessel contains 24 litres of a milk-water mixture in the ratio 5:3. 8 litres of this mixture is removed and replaced with pure water. What is the new ratio of milk to water?

Initial milk = 24×5/8 = 15 L, water = 9 L. Removing 8 L of mixture removes milk and water in the same 5:3 ratio: milk removed = 8×5/8 = 5 L, water removed = 3 L. Remaining milk = 10 L, remaining water = 6 L, and 8 L of water is added back, so water = 6+8 = 14 L. New ratio = 10:14 = 5:7.
